How the calorie calculator works

First the calculator estimates your basal metabolic rate (BMR) with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990), which performs most accurately in comparison studies:

  • Men: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5
  • Women: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161

The BMR is then multiplied by your activity factor (PAL). The result is your total daily energy expenditure, in other words the number of calories at which your weight stays stable on paper.

Lose, maintain, or gain weight?

Your total daily energy expenditure is the reference point. If you consistently eat more, you gain weight, if you eat less, you lose weight. How many calories do I need per day?

That depends on your sex, age, height, weight, and activity level. The calculator first estimates your basal metabolic rate (BMR) using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and then multiplies it by your activity factor (PAL). A 35-year-old man weighing 80 kg at 1.80 m with a desk job and no regular exercise lands at roughly 2,100 kcal per day, for example.

What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the energy your body burns at complete rest, for things like breathing, heartbeat, and body temperature. Your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) adds everything on top as soon as you move: it is BMR times your activity factor and describes your actual daily calorie needs.

Which formula does this calculator use?

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation from 1990. In nutrition science it is considered the most accurate estimation formula for the resting energy expenditure of healthy adults and is recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, among others.

How many calories do I need to lose weight?

A moderate deficit is considered to be about 300 to 500 kcal below your TDEE. That lets you lose weight slowly without pushing your body into conservation mode. For larger deficits, get professional support, for example from a qualified nutrition coach or your doctor.

How accurate is a calorie calculator?

Every formula is an estimate. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation gets the BMR of most healthy adults right to within about plus or minus 10 percent. Depending on muscle mass, hormones, and genetics, your actual expenditure will differ. Treat the result as a starting point and watch how your body responds over a few weeks.

Does exercise count toward the activity factor?

Yes. Choose the factor that best describes your overall day-to-day life including workouts. If you have a desk job and train three times a week, the moderately active level is usually the right fit.
